For the same reason Californicators and New Yorkers move to the west. Their original habitat is worthless so they have to seek new habitat to survive.

And that right there is why conservation easements and protecting habitat is so darn important. Imagine a bunch of "ranchettes" breaking that ground up. Or ground like it.
