Coyotes killed a fawn right behind the house last night. I got up at 4:00 to let the dogs out and stoke the fire. My young Brit who usually charges off stayed close with his nose into the wind. It's not unusal to have different critters around at night but this was something he didn't want to mess with. Back in the house I heard some soft yips but I thought they were coming from up on the ridge. When it got light out I put the dogs out and the young one took off. When I went looking for him I found the fawn. Had to be early this morning as they hadn't ate very much. I have never found a kill this close to the house before. When my wife got up about 8:00 I told her about it. She looked out the sliding glass door and said "what's that on it"? Sure enough a coyote was eating away. Cracked the slider a little and nailed him. I've never seen one act that bold before.

At least that 'yote is done causing problems. They do get very bold at times, around here they get used to tractors and at night will follow the tractor watching for mice, gophers, etc. One night I was broke down in the field, as I was crawling out from under the disk there were two coyotes trotting towards me, when I stood up the one stopped and stood at about 30-40 yds the other trotted up to about 15 yds and then just looked at me for several seconds, after I yelled at him he walked back to the other one and then they just watched until I got going again. Also, earlier this winter coyotes killed a couple of the neighbors Chihuahuas right on their porch (personally I'll take the coyotes over those noisy little dogs, but that's just me).

He had a nice coat but not really thick. Just hasn't been real cold this winter. I put the spotlight on that field last night. There were 2 racoons up the slope and maybe a coyote further up. I should have been more patient.
