still planning my first trip west to archery elk hunt this fall and am starting to go cross eyed looking at stats online. I originally planned on Colorado otc archery if my dad drew a muzzleloader tag but he isn't going to be able to go. So now I'm torn between Idaho and Colorado and what unit. we were limited to a few units In Colorado because of the amount of points he has. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on gohunt insider (or something similar) to help me decide on a unit. being new to western hunting its a little overwhelming.

I would suggest that you first identify what you are looking for in a hunt; solitude, high success, low pressure, scenic, big bulls, any elk, etc. Once you identify that, the INSIDER filter system can help you sort units by many different criteria, for all states in their system.

If not that, going to the agency websites and digging into the harvest reports, population surveys, etc. will get you a lot of good information.

Good luck in your search.
