Garden is in!!

It's been so cold in Iowa we are just starting. Mine will be tilled Monday evening. I love "cold weather plants", such as broccoli, cabbage and peas...... not sure how they will fair being planted this late in the year.

Good luck with that garden.

good luck to all
the dog

Cold here too; mine went in three weeks later than normal, then no rain for over two weeks so the corn, peas and butterbeans got a slow start.

Got my potatoes and sweetcorn in. With the night time temps I decided to hold off a little longer for the tomatoes and peppers.

Tarheel, the deer in your area must know you are one serious guard of that garden! Haha! The only 'high fence' activity we have is to keep deer OUT of such gardens and I have to say, I do not believe I've seen a garden as good looking as that!

Thanks. No problem from deer; I did have a matched pair of 3x3 bucks saunter through the back part of the lot and down my driveway to the street a few years ago but never any damage. I live out near the edge of town and they mostly hang out along the creek bed 1/4 mile down the ridge but we do have a small flock of turkeys which hang out in a small wooded area about 6-8 blocks away. I have to keep out the rabbits which only bother the green peas and green beans, the woodpeckers and ground squirrels which have an affinity for tomatoes, and the grackles which like to pull up my peas and corn after it has sprouted. I don't use any poisons and if the animals get a little of it that's ok by me so long as they don't get greedy.

Geez TH! You couldn't even turn a VW around in our garden. That's how small it is due to shade from big trees.

Since the area is under a powerline I don't have to worry about shade. In years past the garden included both plots you see as well as the grassy area in between, 35' X 100', but after the kids left it got too much and if we went on vacation we couldn't rely on anyone to pick the produce when needed and look after all that so I cut way back. Since I do the entire area with a 5hp front tine tiller, a dicky ticker and a hoe it gets to be a bit overwhelming some times but the farmer in me can't just let it go.
