I had a short break in my work, so with an understanding boss who let me finish a few hours early i got home, bundled the kids into the ute, packed up and raced off to the country. I just made it in time to sight in the .22 and gave my older boy a few shots at a target. Clever dad put a yellow sticker on a yellow box for him to aim at, but with a bit of assitance, all three landed on the paper. 10 metres is a long way for a kid!

When we got back to my brothers place, there was a big fire going and kids being kids they wanted to put sticks in and try to set the rest of the surrounding grass on fire, but they eventually made it into bed without any burns on either of them.

Then it was up early and out to some farm country where my brother has access to a stupid amount of land as he is pretty efficient at keeping the foxes under control. With a few other kids and young guys keen to have a hunt, there was quite the crew and we just drove patches of grasslands and rivers.

My boys watched this fox bolt out to get shot by one of the shooters. A few of the young guys lined up for a pic.

Then my older boy wanted to have a steer as we were driving through the paddocks. Its never too young to get em behind the wheel sitting on dads lap of course.

After a few more drives it was time to light another fire, at the kids pleading and have a cook up.

A mob of ducks were on a nearby dam so the young blokes sorted out a few.

But when the time come to pluck a few, they went strangely missing in action..

It was time eventually for us to push off and a quick look at the tally showed a few less lamb and native killers troubling the farmers.

And before my ute hit 5th gear, my lads were dreaming of their next trip back into the country.

A good quick overnighter had by all, sorry for some of the poor pics, all of them were on the iphone, so not the best quality, especially in low light.

Congrats! You know it's a good day when the kiddos are asleep within 15min of getting in the car for the ride home. Well done!

Great write up mate, and the pics tell the story well, if those boys are half as keen as their old man they'll be hooked already.

Been meaning to ask if you picked up a new ute, nice WHITE colour. lol

Ah yeah, I hope that box was full when the young fella shot it.
