I should be writing a letter to the IRS right now, but I feel like thinking about important things. So I have duplicate Winchester Model 70 Featherweights in 30-06….even if they were born 40 years apart. I was thinking of making a change with my newer Classic Stainless FWT (early New Haven, 5 digit SN) and I I’m thinking out loud about which way to go.

My thoughts were rebarrel to 7-08 and see if I could take advantage of the long action and long throat it since I shoot copper and 140s run in the 1.350” range (or 6.5x284 which should be on a long action). My other thought was to rebore it and go 338-06, however with the barrel diameter of .545 this only leaves walls of .1075, which as I understand it “should” be fine. The downside is that I don’t like it as a 30-06 and it’s my hardest recoiling rifle, though I think with a new 1” Pachmayer instead of the ½” rock for a pad it has now would make a world of difference.

Realizing that I don’t care about how practical it is or if it duplicates what I already have and am purely doing this for fun what are your thoughts?

a. You’re nuckin’ futs J.R., don’t mess with a 5 digit New Haven, put a pad on it and shoot.
b. You already have four 7mms, seriously, five is just stupid.
c. 7-08 is the best thing in the entire world.
d. 6.5x284 is the most bestest thing in the entire world.
e. .338 is not a .35, but Ben Lamb approves, go for it.

...a fifth 7.

Let me finish this glass of vino & I'll have a different answer.

6.5-06, 6.5x55, .260, .264 WM or ??????? mtmuley Sorry, multiple choice and I failed.

I vote A...and a decelerator pad with reduce the recoil tremendously!!! I put one on my 30-378 and there is a dramatic difference in recoil.IMHO

I have a featherweight made in the same city I was born in and in the same year. It's a .270 and I love it but I couldn't shoot it much. Even the light load kicked the crap out of me so I decided to put it into a bell and Carlson ultralight stock. It comes with a decelerator pad and now I could shoot 1000 rounds without feeling it. Super light, super easy shooting, SUPER HAPPY.

a. No
b. Agreed to a point. I wouldn't do an -08 based round on that action.
c. See "b".
d. I do kinda like this plan! Lapua brass! I'm not sure about getting it to feed in a CRF...
e. I wouldn't rebore to .338. I'd retube to 9.3X62 if you want to go bigger. Ben Lamb would approve!

E. Duh.

Or, 9x57.

Or 35 Whelen.

I like decelerator pads a lot, especially on something like a medium bore that has a little push to it. The stock design of the model 70 is much better for recoil than my 35 whelen with the old Mauser stock. I've got an 8mmI in an old 1888 commission rifle that is painful frm the bench. My whelen is a pup compared to it. My 9.3x74R is even more tame.

Go medium bore, be a man. :D

338-06 no question, or 35whelen, or 9.3, or 400 Hawk, or... do some action work (or sell) and build a magnum, really just do what ever you want.

Why be covered up in 7mms? They are virtually all the same and have very little performance advantages over one another, as do many of the other cal/carts in the same family. IMO once you can step up to the 220-250gr weight in bullets you really won't see any sort of advantage on the receiving end. Step up the recoil department, put on your big girl panties and build a bigger rifle. A recoil pad will help "tame" that pesky 30-06 recoil. :D

I think I'm going to go 338 for both cost savings (less than $300 to rebore) and better fit for my existing calibers. Nosler has a new 225gr etip as well. I'll put a new pad on it while it's getting done, I put a pachmayer on my other 06 when I redid the stock and it's all it needed.
