I don't know why anyone would be surprised. Voters, particularly right leaning voters, vote against things more than they vote for things. The literal definition of Conservative involves keeping traditions and avoiding radical change. Watching them attack their own isn't a surprise, it's politics. The fact that they make up lies is becoming more common place, for an obvious reason.
Saying particularly right leaning voters diluted your argument quite a lot.
I think the reality is most people don't have any logic or reasoning behind their votes. It's not party specific.
I too think you have this one backwards since DJT burst onto the scene.

Depends on how you look at it. DJT still sold fear and not solutions. I don't think people were thinking "progress" when they filled in the circle for him.
I disagree. I’m not on-board with most (basically any) of the ‘solutions or progress’ that he sold, but in his supporter’s eyes that’s exactly what he offered.
The dems platform is almost 100% focused on just not being him- perhaps at no time in American history had a platform been more against a single person rather than really for anything. This is a big part of why they lost the last election.
yes, the dems have been, are, and proposing to quadruple down on the pathetic and proven losing strategy of "not him!" with some extra thick gravy of "i opposed him the hardest in term 1 so choose me!"
but the whole DJT thing really hit the afterburners when it was all about how this man is the antithesis of hillary clinton and that was.... kind of it. the unofficial slogan of his base was "own the libs" and/or "#*^@#* your feelings"
the frequency with which the current admin continues to use the term "radical left" just tells me the primary message remains "we're not the cooky scrawny liberals" so don't look too closely at what we're actually talking/not talking about here.
it's all the same stuff at the end of the day. i just can't believe how hard the democrats are truly doubling down on the strategy.

IDK, take a look at the primaries, people on the right aren't getting elected for their ideas or the solutions they're offering, many of those winning are simply getting the DT endorsement and not being RINO or libtard.
At least in my inbox and mailbox, the candidates on the left or center are talking about actual issues. Like homelessness, affordability, and jobs.
Though I'm sure it differs regionally.

I think the Democrats lost the election the night of the debate.
That laid bare any remaining doubts about how demented Biden was. It was truly the emperor has no clothes moment. We will never fully know why Biden decided to run for a second term. Had he decided much earlier to be a one term generation transitional president, it is likely things break much differently.
The border also cost the Democrats vote. For whatever reason, perhaps dementia, Biden was far too lax on border security. His late efforts came across as too little too late.
I think for the mid terms, going anti Trump works well enough. No party can advance an agenda, without the presidency. Certainly in 2028 Democrats have to present a vision of how they would govern.

lol. Running against him seems like a good strategy. Dems lost the last election because the price of eggs. DJT had no solutions or policies. When people were told look at Project 2025 as the game plan, he claimed to know nothing about it. Voters are lazy. They don’t want to do any research, they just want promises. When individuals speak for all voters and say they want to see “polices” or “solutions”, I just laugh.
