Forky/Shitbuck of a Lifetime

Not the buck of a lifetime, but Buzz & Bernie were able to take him.

I ran into Bernie while lobbying in D.C. a couple years back and talked with him for several minutes. As my lobbying partner and I walked to the next meeting I started to laugh thinking of this photo. She asked what was so funny, and I just said never mind...

I so wish I would have had a copy of the photo, I would have no doubt showed it to him.

When I was about 16 I shot a mule deer buck with clean 5 inch spikes. The ground was dry so I decided to carry it back to the truck. Halfway back I had to cross a barbwire fence so I just leaned forward and dumped it off my shoulders on the other side of the fence. The landing broke both antlers off near the skull. It looked like a yearling doe.

Sorry, no pictures, just envision a skinhead.

I have a handful! And maybe one more to add but I might need to wait till a certain thread is finished. The one circled was after a brutal opening morning finding 18 people in my “secret spot”. Every little cut had 2- 3 people sitting at the top of it. That little guy popped out right next to the truck and gave me the broadside for long enough to put him in the crosshairs 3 different times before finally pulling the trigger.

A number of years back my brother shot this mule deer, sort of an odd one.

My first buck was a spork. In CA it’s fork on at least one side, no spike shooting allowed.
Mine was so small that the officer who signed it off said “ No way you saw that tiny point before you shot him” I assured him that yes I did. I thought he was a spike but as he walked by at 30 yards I saw a glimpse of the point and that was good enough for me.
He didn’t believe but he had no choice but to sign it off.

I killed this buck while answering the call of nature and then a artist friend of mine immortalized the moment with this fine piece of art. The artist was a bit generous with the antlers in their rendition.20250823_202723.jpg20250823_202803.jpg
