As of about 8pm last night, they will only sign or franchise tag him if they believe they can flip for more than the 3rd/4th rounder they will get as a compensatory if he walks as a free agent. Daniel Jones will be next year’s Darnold at $5mm — planning to have him play the first 2-3 games before giving way to JJ.
It would be more like them hiring Magic or Bulls hiring Jordan. Those likely wouldn’t work either.
He submarined his chance at anything more than a high level backup contract. He’ll get $8M-$12M a year as a backup, just like he did this year.
I can’t disagree, but the NFL market is sometimes irrational, so we may be surprised. I was shocked at 3 yrs guaranteed for an old immobile .500 QB coming off a mid-season Achilles tear. I remain open to being surprised again.
I was never “high as a kite”. This is a 10-7 wildcard first round loss roster. I have said so consistently from the start. I would have not put one penny on this team in the playoffs - same as the team that lost to NYG. This is a re-build that has generated a lot of fun, but it is not even close to the destination.

Funny you mentioned this. I told my dad this last night and added on that I think he did it on purpose to see if Sam could run the offense the way he wants it ran, kind of like a test.

Testing a qb to see if they can run your game plan is why they play preseason games. Not in the first round of the playoffs.

I can't find a galaxy in which bringing in a 40 year old egotistical narcissist fixes this team. They have a top 10 draft pick QB who will be handed the reigns, and a different top 10 draft pick QB in Jones that is more than likely going to be the backup.
The two big differences between the Favre to vikes story and the Rogers to vikes speculation. (1) Favre was great fun and able to galvanize a locker room behind him — a number of players played their best year of their career with/for him — while Rogers is a toxic divider; (2) The vikes back in ‘09 team was fine with Brett being his own OC, KOC would not allow Rogers to play that game and no way Rogers runs KOC’s offense the way it is intended.

Darnold doesn't make sense in MN for more than 1 to 2 years and one of the 7 teams that need a QB for next year will give him at least 25m for 2 to 3 years and that is the very low end. MN doesn't want him for even close to that.

I think you capture Kawasei’s vision. Word has it that KOC advocated to keep Kurt all three times it came up and that KOC was beginning to push for Sam - but I assume that changed. KOC loves his play book and just want to have somebody run it the way he has it in his head - and he wants that sooner than later. Also, don’t assume JJ was his guy. I heard he was really big on Maye and so-so on JJ, a no-go on Williams, Jaden & Nix as they weren’t good fits for his offense. And I do think in KOC’s world he would pass 65-70% and only run because he would feel guilty not to. Similarly, he wants those down the field and has limited interest (and unclear ability) to make screen game, swing game and short throws in the middle work for him.
