Anybody pack a fly rod (or any rod) when backpack hunting? I am much more confident I could fool a trout then an elk and I’m toying with the idea. Worth the weight and possible time distraction? Not sure why I’m asking cause I’m pretty sure my flybox will find it’s way in my pack no matter what.

personally , when I hunt , I hunt . when I fish ,I fish. but if you don't mind packing it , go for it . just don't leave your camera behind, we love both hunt and fish porn.

This is my philosophy as well. I do carry a fly rod in my truck at all times anyway. If I tag out early, I'll fish something.

Found a 6ft "Brush Flyrod" at Sportmans Warehouse.Guy had to dig around upstairs, but found it,brushed the dust off and
gave me a great discount.Perfect for hiking and heavy tree and brush conditions.Small tin of Flies and I'm set.

I have an 8 ft tenkara Cutthroat from Temple Fork Outfitters. The entire set up, rod, line, flies, extra leader, weighs 4 ounces and telescopes into the handle of the rod. No excuse NOT to take it. Last weekend on an overnight backpack/scouting trip I caught 30 cutties on foam grasshoppers and kept enough to eat and feed my two friends. So why not?

I pack an empty pop can with 6 lb test and tie the line to the tab. Less than 1 oz. Hold the base of the can and whip that sucker you can cast about 20 ft. Red neck as it gets but it catches fish and tough to beat the weight.

For sure take your fishing gear west. I can't imagine a trip west without wetting a line.

(I was that kid in the back seat asking "do you think there might be fish in that crick" on every highway bridge crossing)

That's hilarious, Kansasdad!
I was that kid tired of asking and amped it up to ad nauseam level, "I see trout!" or, "fish!" every bridge we zipped over. Didn't help my objective.

I pack my fly rod and a go-kit of a few favorite flies and for the situation on every backpacking trip I go on near water. I am planning on bringing it on a 8 day backpack hunt this October. There are too many alpine lakes to resist. If I only had 2 or 3 days to hunt, I would probably leave it at home.

I bring my Mini Teton by Tenkara Rod Co. Can't be more than a couple of ounces. It's not an ideal fishing set up but it's perfect for a stream in the elk woods when the action on land is slow. Also good for ultra light backpacking
