Floorless Tents and Creepy Crawlies

I’m new to floorless tents but want to try it out this year to save weight. I’ll be in New Mexico so my main concern is snakes, ants, and others. I figure it won’t be an issue during November and for summer scouting I should be good as long as I don’t set up on a snake hole or ant hill.

Just looking for advice, validation, experiences, etc.

my limited November experience in NM would be a heck no for floorless tents. Spiders and scorpions creep me out more than snakes and ants.

I’ve been using floorless shelters exclusively for 7 years. Minus a bad experience in the Chihuahua desert in the summer, I’ve never had bad issues with insects etc.

Alaska, wall tent, back pack tipi's, floorless, most often over 40 years. Critters are skeeters, spiders, mice, weasels.

I would never be able to actually sleep in a floorless tent in NM, that spider migration alone.

Just remember to turn your boots over and shake them before you put them on, you’ll be fine.

I don’t think you are saving that much weight. Don’t forget the rodents.

What if you poured bleach around the tent base??? The smell wouldn't be great.

I leave no gap in my Tipi, I utilize a shovel or kick up the dirt. Had 1 bad experience with mice , no more gap for creepy crawlers lol

I prefer to just piss everywhere often. Let them know who owns this space!

I've been running a floorless tipi for about 8 yrs now. For warm/hot weather, I run an inner nest with a waterproof floor and upper made of netting. The winter version is the same design with nylon uppers instead of netting. Keeps the bugs and dirt out, all but eliminates any condensation issues in cold/wet weather.
