July 31, 1976. Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado, 144 people perished. My Parents were out of town so my buddies and I were drinking beer on the back porch cheering on the most intense rain and lightning storm any of us had ever seen. We had no idea that 144 people were being killed a few miles from us. The next morning we used a back road to get by the road blocks to overlook the river and were stunned to see the small creek had filled the plains valley just below the canyon. There was an Airstream trailer wrapped around a large cottonwood tree about ten feet off the ground. Anyone else remember it?
