Hey guys,

Taking my dad (70) and myself (29) on an archery hunt for elk in Colorado this year; OTC out of state. What are some good places that are mostly flat with decent bull numbers? Densely wooded areas aren't an issue so much as steep terrain.

I would say go to gohunt.com and cross that info over with google earth and your answer should be somewhere in there. Research can be just as fun as the hunt. Welcome to HT.

One issue with densely wooded areas is there is likely to be a lot of deadfall to climb/scramble over, flat or not. I find it a lot easier to climb steep inclines than scramble and fight through the dead stuff. Just something to keep in mind while you research.

I hunted unit 62 this past year and it wasn't necessarily flat but easier terrain than other places iv hunted, might be worth looking into.

Hmm...looking for an OTC place that is easy walking with good bull numbers? I seriously doubt there is such a place. Why? Because I'm sure every elk hunter would want to hunt in this place as well and it would be overrun with other hunters.
Good luck with your search for this magical place. 🦄

Amen. If is public, easy terrain, within hour hike of road or trailhead then should expect will encounter more hunters within 1 mile than mature bulls. You can find private land that meets your other criteria. OTC elk in Colorado will have pressure in public places which are easy and sometimes pressure even where is not easy. You can buy hunts in NM, CO, UT and NV if have money to burn on this perhaps once in a lifetime adventure. You might be able to get a couple of MT tags after the draw results come out which you can use with an outfitter to hunt the Bob. Would be memorable if never let an arrow fly.
