First Bugles of the Fall

I will never take for granted the first bugles of the fall....it's just magical. Incredibly blessed to live so close to some of the best elk country Montana has to offer. The magic began yesterday evening 9/2/26. Two different bulls bugling - one off by himself tearing up every tree/shrub he came across and another tending to 30 cows and calves already. Best of luck this season to all lucky enough to chase them around.

For me it was least night. Didn’t get into them hunting but on the way out a nice bull was in a field with his cows letting bugles rip. You forget how cool that noise is.

Bachelor groups are breaking up and bulls are going looking for cows.

I hope that bull survives a few years. He is gonna be impressive if he makes it to maturity.

Hope they crack off, leave tomorrow for my first elk hunt! High expectations of getting tired out and having fun, anything after that is more than breaking even.

Bumped two bulls on my training run yesterday. Both still wearing velvet, just a few cows. Also bumped two bow hunters. I’ll wear my hearing aids this morning see if I pick up any bugles. Without the aids they would have to be slobbering on my neck for me to hear them. Love this time of year.

I think the funniest thing to do is take someone into a hot bugling area who has never experienced bulls on the prod. We’ve taken friends back packing into the Eagle Caps and Hells canyon just so they can hear it for the first time. It’s best if the bulls are close and it’s just about dark. WTFWT look on their face is priceless.

Our mini herd usually runs in a 2-3 day cycle. Since they show pretty regularly, its really great if someone is visiting and they show up.
My youngest grandson was up with his girlfriend a couple months ago. She had never seen an elk live before. A couple cows wandered down for a drink at the other end of the pond . She was a bit startled with "What the hell is that?" My grandson got a great laugh out of it. I guess she didn't realize that they were so big.
