We landed Thursday evening & got camp set up.
Dogs were amped so nobody slept well, but we managed. Hunted a chunk of ground I usually move roosters & sharpies, but after 4 miles we had nothing to show for the dogs' good work. The puppy is 10 months old & hunted thick cover like she was born for it. The 3 year old covers ground like a jackrabbit and must have hit 7 miles easy.
We tried out some browning skid plates. Overall good quality materials & craftsmanship, but the rubbed Greta's pits raw. Annie took to hers well. I probably got Greta's too tight.
Friday was lovely all day, so we hunted most of the day & retired to camp around 3 to enjoy some down time. Beef tenderloin with onions & mushrooms on the camp chef for dinner & turned in around 9. At some point, one of the dogs puked & got cold (We left the heaters at home). Greta eventually just took over my bag & cot.
This morning was a bit of a late start after the rodeo the night before. We walked 3 miles in a coulee with a nice little reservoir on it with nothing to show but a lotnof meadowlark flushes. By the time we were done at 10:30, it was 75. By the time we got to back to camp, it was 80 with 20-30 mph winds. So we broke camp & got a hotel room for tonight.
We'll hit some spots tomorrow closer to home. Hoping there are a few roosters left.
I'm really happy with the dogs. Greta has been all over the place since the new pup arrived but she's put it together & is working hard. The kid has the instincts & nose, but she gets tired faster than Greta. That stamina will come with age.
