I've been keeping an eye out for a decent model 1894 for a while. You just never know what you will find at a garage sale. I would liked to have found a Saddle Ring Carbine but this rifle was too nice to pass up for $1,250. It's a good %75 or better, made in 1905 according to Madis' book and in the desirable 38-55 calibre, oct 26" bbl and buckhorn sights. All original. Blue Book says around $2K+. I did good.

If you plan on using it for hunting be advised that factory-loaded .38-55, if you can find them, are pretty gutless. They have to be that way for the old weak rifles still kicking around out there in that caliber. I suspect you could safely get a little more zing by hand-loading. But, I'm no expert on what the '94 will withstand, so I won't recommend any loads.

I have a #1 in .38-55 that I load to modern pressure, and get 2240 fps with a Barnes 255 gr. I've killed a few deer with it. It is real easy to shoot despite the hot loads. Never tried it on elk, but maybe someday.

Anyway, nice rifle. Looks like a keeper.

Very nice, I'm jealous. I'd really like to have a lever action and it really seems that old is the way to go.
