My 25-year-old daughter called me in tears this week.

She went to a new dentist who strongly recommended very expensive work to remediate the imminent self-destruction of her entire mouth.

I asked why the change in dentists, to which she replied that this was a brand new office, very close to her house.

I asked her what her previous dentist recommended, to which she replied nothing but periodic routine cleanings.

Then I explained how private equity operates. She did some cursory research and took it from there. #prouddad

I had a real-life situation similar to that when I was in college. I went to a new dentist and he did xrays and the whole nine yards for a new patient. It was November and by some miracle I needed the exact amount of work done that my insurance would cover for the remaining of the year, but he also strongly suggested to get some additional work done after the calendar year on my new insurance.

A quick google search shows he has not been in business since shortly after that time.

That's a rookie move. Should have strung her along for a couple of cleanings and then delivered the big news. Don't worry, it will get worse. While on one hand they charge for unnecessary stuff, they also deliver the basic stuff with poor quality. We just keep lowering the bar in the name of cheap service. The dumbing down of America.

Not a Marketplace find but a Marketplace experience for you. I live in rural Oklahoma and crackheads are a dime a dozen. A few days ago I listed 2 gas leaf blowers I had laying around my shop that aren’t running but still in decent shape for $20 for the pair. A lady messaged me one evening and within 5 minutes we’d agreed to meet to make the deal. I get to the spot and a couple rough looking guys show up, hand me the money and take the leaf blowers. Smooth transaction. We’d had a brief conversation in my hunting chat group about the blowers the day before and tweakers on marketplace. So after I drove off I went to message my buddies and talk-to-texted “I just got my 20 bucks for the leaf blowers from a couple of tweakers” and hit send. I instantly realized I’d sent it to the lady that messaged me instead of my hunting group. Marketplace messenger won’t allow you to delete a message for everybody. Just yourself. I quickly blocked the poor lady and deleted the listing and felt absolutely horrible.

Jan. 6 and already a post of the year candidate. I'm still laughing.

I once switched dentists between an X-ray and filling a cavity. The new dentist never found the cavity.
