Drought for the west

Saw this one blowing up yesterday afternoon from my place. 3000 acres in a day. Lots of grassy benches, drought stressed pine and fir, with a lot of standing dead trees as well. Warm today, front coming through tomorrow, with snow and rain Thursday. Could get ugly before the snow comes.

It's going to be a very bad season.

Everyone says this. But I’ve heard experts say you don’t want a wet spring and summer to grow big grass that will cause more/larger fires in late summer. For this and other reasons I’m happy with this winter and spring so far in Idaho.
Certainly true especially on the high plains areas. It seems like trying a "hope and pray" approach in bad situation. It's all we can do at this point.

I have zero worries for me because I don't live in a high risk area. Worst case is breathing the smoke for months. I worry for firefighters that are going to be put in bad situations where they are understaffed. I worry about people who may lose their homes. I also know how every fire is going to lead to people claiming "mismanagement of forests" to justify cutting every tree they can reach easily.

Because if there is a fire in my neck of the woods I will be on it, I have told my wife: People, Pets, Paperwork… and my moose mount. 🤣
