Do you use a whistle?

Reading my books it seems like I need to start using a whistle with my training.

Do you guys use a whistle? Trying to decide if I need to start using one or not.

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject.

Absolutely, if for no other reason than a whistle is a lot easier on the vocal cords than yelling at your dog.

Absolutely essential for longer distances. My dogs follow whistle commands better than voice. It is more distinct.

Definately. Spooks fewer birds too than if you use your voice.

Yes. I have one hanging from every vehicle mirror just in case I forget my "good whistle". I only have three whistle commands. 1. long blow = come. 2. short blow = gets his/her attention 3. two quick blows = change direction ( quarter right or left).

As stated.... saves your voice and the sound travels further.

I dont own a hunting dog but i have spent all my shooting life around one when i have hunted and without exception all my friends use a whistle.

but there are loads available.
The only problem we have ever experienced is two guys on the same shoot with the same pitched whistle, then it can get quite amusing.
But start shouting at the dogs and the birds hear you from miles away and start to associate all the shouting with shooting, your success will take a nose dive.

Yup, love the whistle. I feel like it spooks bird much less. I use 1 blast for sit (get ready for a cast), 2 for change direction, 3+ for come/heal.

You won't regret it.

IMO I believe that whistle commands are essential gun dog commands. They are as important as using the right ammo with the right gun. How else would you get your dogs attention at long distances especially in the wind at 300+ yards running a blind retrieve? I use one short hard tweet to get them to stop. As soon as they stop they turn and sit waiting for a hand signal. Three or more tweets means come. It has also saved them a time or two when they are about to get into trouble. Really easy to teach whistle commands.
