I’ve tried to make it difficult but more rewarding this year. Right out front, I do hunt on private land; be it low fenced w plenty other hunters around and over a feeder.
I hunt w a recurve bow, on the ground, behind brush; not a pop up blind, I can shoot well out to 30yds but limited myself under 15 n preferably under 10. There have been 4 different bucks that I have decided I would try for this year.
I have gotten to go only 4 times so far this year do to work, VA appointments, family obligations, n wind. I have had at least 1 of the bucks within range each time but they; or other deer in or around, have never presented a clear shot opportunity.
Got set up this morning, 5 deer out in front of me before daylight, one dwarfed the others in body size; I figured it was the big 8pt, at 0719, he and the other deer there presented a great shooting opportunity; couldn’t see the antlers great yet but could make out my target just fine n at that point thought for sure it was him, drew back, hit my anchor, found my spot, n released. Perfect sound n reaction….watched him run, pile of dust!!! AWESOME!!!
Still kicked back n waited 30min; bad past experience, then went to track just for experience n due diligence…found the arrow, great blood, followed the blood, dead deer but SH*T smaller antlers than the 8pt I thought I had drilled.
Called my Bud to help load n we both thought, damn this deer is deceptively heavy!!
Got him back to the barn n gutted him; curious, we put him on the zeroed scale…
182lbs dressed!!!! This is just west of San Antonio where a decent dressed buck on low fence is barely breaking 100lbs!!
Word got around n I had my fill of whiskey, beer, n cigars today from people coming by to see him!!!
His antlers weren’t huge by any stretch of the imagination; only 17 1/2” but his body was huge n full of fat!!
The grandsons will have their pick of the 4 bucks now n I will hunt another spot w the recurve n drill does.
Great Day!!!
