The higher the objective the better light gathering in low light situations. The bigger the objective the bigger the bell and higher rings needed. Like JLS stated this becomes a cheek weld problem unless you have a add on cheek piece or a higher comb stock. I have scopes with both objectives but on all my standard rifle I go with 40 or 44 mm objectives because good glass helps with with light transmission and the lower rings help with cheek weld and instant target acquisition.

I have 40s on all my hunting rifles. I hunt whitetail generally in the woods. I have bought and used a few equivalent 50s and I didn't care for them. Sold Them all. I might have got used to them if I had stuck with them but went back to 40s after a short time. Just me, it took me 4 years to get used to a 24 inch barrel instead of a 22.

The VX5 & 6 is a good compromise at 42 & 44mm objectives...here's a little RUM toy wearing a VX5 3x15x44

Have a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x 56mm on my wimpy little toy Weatherby Mark V .300 Wby. mag., and have 2 of the Leupold VX-R's. A VX-R 4-12x 50mm on my .257 Wby. mag., and a VX-R 3-9x 50mm on my T/C Omega. Remington 700 LSS in 7mm RM wears a silver Vari-X III 3.5-10x 50mm. Yep, like the Leupolds's!
