I would trade any and all hunts for the rest of my life to have another chance to hunt a desert ram.

Just wondering if any of you have taken one, or if any one you are applying for a tag, and what would make a desert ram hunt so special for you

At my age (late 30’s) and late to the points game I don’t even bother with sheep. Unless it was through a raffle or maybe a dall (even those are getting out of reach now) I don’t think I’ll ever get to hunt one. This is also not me complaining, it’s just a math problem.

The closest I’ll probably get to hunting desert sheep would be booking an aoudad hunt. You hunt a lot of the same country and often may get an opportunity to see desert sheep.

Interesting. If applying for other species anyway, sheep is not a costly add on in many states. Most states have opoortunity to draw with no or low points accrual. I.e., Colorado buy three years of opoints are yuo can stop and still be in the draw annually for Rocky, or in draw with zero points for desert. Pony up for a few years and a guy in his 30’s can have 40+ years of draw attempt wherre yoiu ‘could’ draw. And this is just for Colo Rockies. I think what you maybe meant is you could care less about hunting sheep-which is fine.

When did you hunt desert and how did it turn out? Photos to share?!

Would love to share that later, it was a "True once in a many lifetimes hunt".

I applied for a desert Big Horn tag for the first time in my life at 54. I was thinking,,,,, "Why Bother?" I put in for the roughest, toughest, driest, biggest, deepest true wilderness hunt zone. Only one tag was offered. I drew it, and I already knew that zone.

I got a desert bighorn in 2024 after being awarded the tag after someone turned the tag back in. :D I just happened to be the first alternate on the list in my first choice area.
I was already sitting on 19 bonus points at the time. I was 62 at the time so who knows if I ever would have drawn a tag while I'm still able to hunt.

Where in Nevada was your DBH hunt? Mine was in the Southernmost Mojave Desert, very remote, vast area of dedicated wildness. Mid-December. Days mid to high 80's, nights mid 20's.
Crystal clear nights, blue-black sky just brilliant with stars.

Was North of Joshua Tree National Monument, 24 years ago.

Was using my Safari Grade Belgium Browning bolt action 30-06 that I had been hunting with it then for 30 years. Simple 3-9 Redfield scope.

I drew the tag on my very first application.

My hunt unit was just north of Pahrump, less than an hour from home. I believe I took the ram on Nov. 26th and used my wifes' Rem. 270.
Nothing like using a classic Jack O'Connor sheep rifle. (y)

How in the world did you kill that ram without $1k worth of "technical gear" clothing like kuiu or sitka?
Just kidding, awesome ram.

Desert rams are cool and all but no way in the world I would trade any and all hunts the rest of my life to hunt one. Not even a world record. I just enjoy hunting to much.

Soon I will be 79 years old. I do not have many hunts left, at least not the way I have so valued them. Solo Wilderness hunts, staying out, sleeping out under the stars. Regarding seeking a trophy, I care not. Any mature ram would be fine. Would be so cool to again be eating the same meat as our ancient SW native people

I'm late to this conversation Mustangs Rule, but I'll add my two bits.
I have been on over a dozen desert bighorn hunts, but only one of my own. Like many who have hunted them, including ol Jack and you, I agree that desert sheep are special.
I'm only two years behind you in age but I'm still hoping for one more shot. I have 24 points in Nevada but as a NR I'm still more likely to die than draw another tag.
Most of my hunts have been, volunteer to help/spot hunts but regardless of who is behind the gun, I love looking for those elusive hard to find critters of the desert.
My own 2015 sheep hunt was a dream, with my son and I spending 18 days scouting but only 3 days hunting. We turned up my dream ram and made it count.

That would be a sweet euro mount. I love the width/flare.
