So we THOUGHT SB25 was going to be bad. Tonight we got a briefing from one of the state "certified" organizations that will be doing some of the "training" that will be required in order to purchase a wide swath of guns come 1 August. Holy F Balls it is A) much worse than we conceived and B) the state of CO is monumentally more incompetent than even I thought. I will try to lay out what the CURRENT situation is, because, even though we are less than 2 months away from the date NOTHING is actually ready/finished/finalized.

This is the general process of what you will need to do to purchase an AR/AR pistol/10-22/ etc (there is a ridiculously long list of covered guns)...1) You will have to register your "intent to purchase" with CPW through a website and pay $52 2) You will then have to get a "name based" background check (there are NO vendors identified, NO requirement parameters, NO idea of cost) 3) Next you have to take both of those to the county sheriff who will be responsible for "certifying " your eligibility to have one of these guns (again, NO parameters of any kind at this point) through some kind of vetting process and they will charge you SOME amount of money but that will be up to INDIVIDUAL departments. This process is supposed to be similar to the concealed carry process which means it will takes MONTHS to complete 4) THEN you will be allowed to take the training course which MUST be 12 hours and HAS to be over 2 days (reduced to 4 hours for those of us with Hunter Safety) from a private company and pay what they want to charge (we were told probably at least $100) 5) THEN you will be issued a card that will allow us to sell you one of the covered weapons and you STILL have to complete what is the normal firearms purchase (4473, approval and additional 3 day wait)......ALL of this will have to be redone every 5 years and although not specifically enumerated will also include a registry of ALL of these weapons purchased. If I was trying to make up crap like this up people would think it was a Benny Hill style farce. I feel really bad for the poor CPW folks who are being thrown to the wolves at
point men for it.

The swing that has happened in Colorado is amazingly bad. I knew people that moved there for freedom from our home state, this is not what they are getting. Plus this will give other states the idea to follow.

That sounds similar to Oregon’s ballot measure 114. After passing in November 2022, there were lawsuits. In December 2022 an attorney for the State told a federal judge the new background check/training systems were ready to go. They were not. Nor were they in 2023.

As of june 2026 nothing’s been implemented. The legislature apparently now delayed much of it until 2028. Unknown whether for political backlash reasons, or inability to set up all the extra processes/hoops.

Point is, unless CO is exponentially more competent than Oregon and CO State government moves at the speed of light, sounds very unlikely CO could be requiring anything by August. (Not legal advice) Plus I assume there could be lawsuits which should further delay. Good luck with that mess.

Well prices will go through the roof here now for those guns. I bet our gun shows will be over run with CO folks too.
