Changes to the Forum Changes

I appreciate your thoughtfulness regarding this and can see both sides. I do like to give the thumbs up, but also dislike how anticipated reactions can make people choose to post/not post.

reading through the other thread made me reflect on the fact that I contribute way more with emojis than comments, and that is something I want to change. A good comment/post brings much more value for everyone than an emoji or meme ever will... Though I think the emojis utilized properly also add value.

Well, when I had our tech guys remove the like button yesterday, I surely didn't expect 200+ comments. I read some of the reasons why people want that button, so it is restored.

I still have my list of ideas about how discussions on this forum more useful, less distracting, and less of what at times seems like sixth-grade playground BS.

Some seem to think that the change I made yesterday was driven by folks hitting the moderation report button. Nope. It had no influence. In fact, yesterday's moderation log only had one reported item. The blocked spammer log was a couple pages long.

I appreciate folks expressing their thoughts on how they interact here. I sometimes use the like button, but try to add a comment if I feel it is worthwhile. Obviously, I am in the minority, at least among those who commented.

I'm the final decision maker on this forum. Like all of my decisions, any time I make a decision it comes with a reservation to change my mind in light of more information.

So, the like/dislike button is back. The concerns about maintaining the quality of the conversation still exist.

Not my idea I read it in the other forum and really liked it think @Nameless Range had it
I think likes fall into two categories:

1. To signal to the poster of an individual comment
2. To signal to other readers of that comment

Be real nice to keep 1 and ditch 2. I assume it might take development, which isn't free.

Limit the likes. You get 10 per week and you better make them count.

Except for the Wordle thread, that's unlimited. lol

That wordle thread would get zero likes if we were limited. As long as the meme thread lives

And we are very grateful that you and other administrators listen to the feedback of members

Thank you @bigfin for listening to the people. While I was an active member before the like button but it was weird after it was removed. It shows your willingness to listen and consider others opinions. I have used the like button in this same way. If I’m engaged in a back and forth with another member I may hit the like button not because I “like” there statement but because I respect their opinion and have taken it into consideration.

Likes and dislikes are one thing, but the passive-aggressive laughing at non-humourist posts grates on me. It's not that I can't handle it per se, but it makes me want to engage less and less. I'd vote to keep the buttons turned off. It would make this feel less social-media-y
