Carolina Timber Rattler

This bad boy is purported to come from Eastern North Carolina. I can't confirm it, but the trees and Spanish moss are typical of that area down in the river bottoms. 9' 6", 2.5 inch fangs. Usually one that size has a head about the size of an average closed fist.

I didn't kill him, got the pic off of a local gun forum. Unless I was in danger of being bitten, he could have gone his way unmolested. I did some research, and the record is only 8 feet, so there's some mythical exaggeration going on here. Still a damned big snake.

Probably so John, much like the aerial views of an alligator pushing a grown whitetail doe in it's mouth across a lake. Seems it's been seen from Texas to South Carolina. The eastern diamondback does, however, only range from lower NC to Louisiana and rarely more than 100 miles from the coast, so that at least narrows it down from "every state in the union."

No doubt it's a big rattlesnake, but also a piece of trick camera work. Notice that the young man's arms are slightly extended towards the camera, placing the snake much closer to the camera while the young man is farther away. Same technique used when people hold their fish out to the camera for pictures, making the fish look much bigger than it actually is. There is a technical term for this; but for the life of me I can't think of it.

BTW, I've also received several e-mails of this, and all of them placed this in a different Southern state, including Texas.

13 Rattles. . .still makes it a big snake. I'm glad I don't have to worry about those when I'm out hunting here. No snake around me is safe. . .not a huge fan.
