LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A chain of private California schools that taught immigrants there are 53 U.S. states and four branches of the U.S. government was ordered to stop handing out phony diplomas this week, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said on Friday.

Authorities seized the assets of California Alternative High School and asked a judge to stop the company's 30 schools statewide from handing out "high school diplomas" to students dreaming of a better life through education, Lockyer said.

The company charged its mainly Latino students $450 to $1,450 for a 10-week course based on a 54-page book that was riddled with errors, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday.

Students learned that Congress had two houses -- the Senate for Democrats and the House for Republicans; that the U.S. flag had not been updated to reflect the addition of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico to the "original" 50 states; that the federal "administrative" branch oversees the Treasury Department; and that World War II occurred from 1938 to 1942.

There are 50 U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii, who are represented on the U.S. flag. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, not a state. There is no "administrative" branch of the U.S. government. The three branches are judicial, executive and legislative. World War II was fought between 1939 and 1945, although the United States did not enter the war until 1941.

The workbook also refers to the play, "Death of a Traveling Salesman," not Arthur Miller's classic "Death of a Salesman."

The company claimed to have 78 locations nationwide and said it was actively expanding operations despite court orders in two other states that sought to block it from claiming the diplomas were "official," Lockyer said.

I figured the extra 3 states would be Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico. that would at least make sense.

Now we see the real dumbing down of america. You bring in immigrants, grant them citizenship faster the dumber they are, and pretty soon the American way of life is gone.

I htought there was on 50 states. I know I don't watch the news or listen to it for that matter but I think I owuld have caught something like that. But hey I guess California is more like its own country right???

As a whole, I'm beginning to think that people are A'holes. If I was going to run a scam, I'd start a non-violent religious group. That way I could make them at least feel good about it while I was screwing them over. Remember Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker? :D

Naw...don't go there! (snicker) I have more class than to hook up with HER! :D

I guess that's what happens when you get a diploma in California

ROTFLMBO! Actually, I'm from the one state in the 50 that a lot of people still don't realize is a state after 92 years of statehood. Some of you know that in my occupation, I do a lot of purchasing for a large power facility. When I call some of the places (especially the deep south or New England) and give my shipping address, mentioning Public Service Company of New Mexico, and the town of Waterflow, New Mexico, I am told, "I'm sorry sir...we don't ship out of the country." Or, "Gee! You speak pretty good English for a foreigner!" ROTFLMBO! "So what joo want, mon...Cheech and Chong??? :D I'm jus' doeeng my zhob, dood!"

LOL Rogue! Hey you work for PNM? We trade with you guys on occassion...we're part owner of good old San Juan Unit #4 (City of Redding dba M-S-R).
If you see Mary Rose tell her Marv & Carl say howdy from Redding.... ;)

I think someone else on this board is in the industry as well...might be T-Bone?

Marv and Rogue:

Small world. I work for Sierra Pacific in the energy trading group. Marv you must be in control or trading. You know Brian and Jennifer Harmon?

I visited your shop about 4 years ago when I was at IDAC. Someone gave me a groovy little mouse pad with your building on it.

Rogue we buy on real time from PNM at 4C345 on a regular basis. You have a fine bunch of folks.

Hey T-bone and Marv,

Indeed it is a small world! This is totally cool, and you even said something nice about us!
Several of the guys who used to work up here at San Juan Plant are working with Systems in Albuquerque. They are the ones who hustle and shuffle the power around to everyone. Paul Gordy worked the BTG board for years, and Kenny Prox started out in the Lab shortly after I did back in '79. Both are really good fellows. I jumped ship from operations after 16 years...got tired of my job being targeted everytime someone got the idea to downsize. I order parts and tools for Units 1-2 Maintenance, keep their books, and other assigned duties. Have tried at every opportunity to prove my worth so they won't even think of eliminating my job again. :D All in all, it's a pretty good job. I finally get to work 4/10's a week after all those years of rotating shiftwork. I knew that we had affiliates in California and several other places, but never realized that some of the guys were right here all the time.

It's my pleasure and honor to make contact with both of you! If there's ever a way I can lend you a hand, or supply information on something, give me a shout. I've become quite adept at finding replacements for obsolete parts and tools over the Internet.

Man this is something else :D
T-Bone...know Brian? Hell, I hired the guy ;)
In fact he was just outside my office as I was typing in that last post haha! Great guy!
Heck if you like our mouse pad, shoot me your address and I can send you out the current care package...

Rogue- I'll echo Tyson sentiments, everyone I've dealt with at PNM have been stand up folks and I've been doing this for 13+ years now. I started on the line crews, then was made the purchasing agent when we began building building power plants in 1994. From there I went into contracts and I currently run the trading and scheduling group for the City of Redding. That was something about that Westwing fire down there  Did they ever figure out the "real" cause of what went down?

Marv,

Well that seals the deal. We have to get out and hunt, fish or something. I'm near Anderson a few times each fall fishing for those salmon of yours.

Brian is a good guy. This place misses him. Tell him Hi from Tyson. I probably met you when I visited a few years ago (back in the crazy days).

Maybe we could arrange a chukar, pig, turkey, bear, or salmon trip here there or somewhere in between.
