Had some close calls in the past but finally got to all come together today. Picked up this nice Coho on a 10 color lead core. To say his arms were tired reeling it in would be an understatement. At 11, he is becoming a good first mate with launching, driving, and starting to run lines. Pretty fun time this summer with him on the boat.1263386007635837033.jpeg

Nice!

It will be the best salmon meal of his life.
We are not big salmon people. Which is why it took us till now to target them. I told my BIL that he could have it for his girls to try. We have a freezer full from last year still. My boy actually prefers lake trout over salmon when we make patties.

Most of this summer we tried learning how to fish the Detroit River and Lake Erie. He was actually the first to catch a walleye this year.

He might change his mind if it's grilled fresh.

Never hurts to bleed em out like walleye and get them on ice quickly too. Good luck if you get back out!

Not a darn thing wrong with salmon. Wish I had more than I do! Love it grilled.

PM me if you use salmon flies. I tie some really nice ones that we have been using on LM for long time. I can send some along to you to try. Last couple years main fly with short teaser above it has been killer on kings.

Appreciate the offer but we don’t do it enough. I have a handful already that I throw out occasionally. Mainly we just run spoons or a meat rig.

Shortly before he died my dad was ravaged by Altzimers. My last visit with him was the day after I finished my guiding season in Bristol Bay 5 years ago. As many of you have experienced, folks afflicted with this disease sometimes have moments of clarity. He laughed that someone was paying me to take them fishing, recalling how I would guide his army buddies into fish on the Kenai in 1960. I was six! He wanted to know if I had fished Lake Michigan yet. “We need to go do that” he said. “Pulling all those people together, getting the science done, that was my greatest work I think.” I told him I would take him when he felt better. He died the next day.
He would be absolutely thrilled to how well that fishery developed and has managed to hang on.
Every time I read one of these reports on kids catching kings, silvers or steelhead, I recall being about that age and helping to collect eggs for the first brood stock for Lake Michigan.
