I have lusted over this particular rifle for more than 30 years. Bought it from a good friend, my brother from another mother. He has Parkinson’s and doesn’t hunt any longer.
It’s a Ruger number 1, Mannlicher stock, 7x57, 20” barrel. Next, I need brass as I have Redding dies. Guess this will not be a safe queen as it has history. This is one of my bucket list rifles that I did NOT need, but need has nothing to do with it. So, embarking on a new adventure. More later. MTG

This 7x57 will be a WT stalking rifle. My old age Makes slow stalking easier all the time. If I will group 1” at a hundred I will be happy. Have read that these can be finicky. I’ll work up some loads.
My friend, Steve, would not even let me handle this rifle in the past. Was afraid I would not give it back. He finally relented and has sold it to me. It will be cherished and not a safe queen. It’s meant to be hunted. To put venison in the freezer. To continue its life as a hunter. MTG

MT,

Nice piece of heritage there. The 7x57 will do anything you really need to do this end of the 48.

Look to some H4350 and a 139 bullet. 2700 fps will do any deer or bear in the lower 48.

7x57 simply works. Kinda like the .308 and ‘06…they just work.

I bought one 3-4 years ago and it has since become my favorite rifle!! Here’s the load I ended up w; maybe something for u to start w. Between me n my 2 grandsons…she’s already stacked up an impressive amount of whitetails n pigs

That’s just about perfect. I’ve got a 22 Hornet of the most recent vintage and would love to get a 7x57, or 243/308 to go along with it.

Caseknife, I had a bargain from Nosler and bought the brass from them. Same brass, no shipping fee and 15% off. MTG

I love mine, It did not go to Africa this year but it will next. If you find some RL 17 you may find as I did you can crack 2900 fps with a 140.

I love the 7x57 Mauser. I have a 95 Mauser I traded for when I was 14. Killed many deer and an antelope with it. Due to the old action I kept pressures low. I prefer using 140 grain bullets.

I had good luck with RL 19. Also had good luck with H4831 and had one load with AA4350.

Someday I hope to have a Rugar 1.

I have a #1a in 275 rigby.AKA 7x57. It just got sent off for a new barrel. I’m getting 2950 with 140 accubonds and just a touch over 2900 with 150s. I’ve ordered up some 132gr. Hammers that I may try in Africa next spring or on cow elk this fall, if the rifle is back in time. Regardless how the rifle does with hammers, I’m quite happy with Accubonds, I’ll leave the 300 HH at home and take the 7x57 to Africa and #1 in 375 HH. While I have several to choose from I pick the 7x57 for most of my hunts in Oregon, Montana and Idaho. You will enjoy yours I’m sure.
