I have a 6.5 CM I want to shoot longer range with it say 800-900 yds. But be able to hand to a kid and have them use it just fine at shorter ranges. Here is my thoughts and the parameters I have in my head:
  1. max min to be 5x
  2. at least 16x min max?
  3. Not a "busy" scope reticle wise because a kid could get confused. I have a Burris eliminator on one 6.5 and the kids have trouble with how busy it is and focusing on the crosshairs
  4. Turret for yardage with zero stop
  5. about $600-$700 max

They aren’t 16 power, but my daughter and I both have 3-9 SWFAs on our 6.5 CMs. They work up close and out to the ranges you are talking about. They don’t come with zero stops but there is a quick fix for that (washers). They dial reliably, hold zero well, and the reticle is not too busy.

A Leupold Vx3HD in 4.5x14 would get you 95% of what you want. I would worry about getting better glass instead of magnification.

I like the windplex reticle for longer ranges, but for a dedicated hunting rig it's hard to not stick with a duplex reticle and knob for elevation.

The Vortex Viper 3x15 is right inside that price range as well.

6x20x50 The breed is your choice. If you want to shoot 600 or more, get all the power you can. You can thank me next year.

I have a vx5 3-15x44 and it has everything you are asking for. Has the windplex reticle which is pretty calm. It is SFP so I don't know if that matters to you or not.
I just thought back on this and 15x may be a little low for 800-900. Leupold does have some 4-20x52 which may fit your needs better.
