You Montana guys will recognize where this is immediately. But, I'll bet there aren't very many on here who can remember seeing Lone Mountain in its natural state. This picture was taken while bighorn hunting in the unlimited area in 1971 or 1972.

Wow, thats really cool. I didn't realize it was only in the 70's and the place wasn't turned into Californiacation.

My great grampa and grampa took a lot of sheep out of that country... and elk.

Thanks for sharing the picture. It was a sad day when Plumb Creek sold Jack Creek for 7m

Great picture! It was a real travesty when they dynamited the top of Lone peak to install that $ucking tram.I'm a skier, but that really pissed me off.

Not from that distance ... but the closer you get, the amount of neon lights, shiny high dollar SUVs, and bling-bling becomes exponentially greater.

A pre-1970 aerial view next to a 2012 aerial view would be very telling.

Sure the summit change isn't visible from a distance,......its the principal of it! Its one of the higher peaks in that area that sits by itself(obviously).I won't say another word, its getting me worked up.

Here is is now
From some angles the chopped top is more obvious. They hacked the top off in the early 90s, about the time when the Bozeman area started becoming popular.

Lucky Mike,

Great picture of Lone Mtn before Big Sky. thanks for posting it.

Here's a pic from two days ago. Things change.

Looks like that last pic was in the vicinity we used to back country ski before it was shut down for seldom used trophy homes.Never forget skiing out of there one day and here was this massive brand new structure( I won't call it a home),sitting there by its lonesome, with the front door wide open and 4' snowdrift through the entry. We politely closed the door for the "uninhabitants" and were met by security down at the gated entrance.Never went back.It was just too absurd.

Unremarkable scene until you come back the week after New Years and there is only 3-4 parked there.

What is the point of having a private jet if it is triple parked and you can’t leave when you want?

Oh please, you people up there have no idea what a ski valley and all it's problems even looks like.

Yep, I've been to the Frisco, CO, area. I know what you're talking about ... and that's why many Montanans are fearful of the "growth."

Ha,its all relative Dink. But you are right, that is why we refer to your state as Condorado.

That's an awesome vintage hunting photo!

Here's lone peak over my head, this fall..

And a shot of my boy dropping off it's summit a couple weeks ago, carrying around about ten cans of Black Star for Dad and Uncle Ryan. There were a dozen goats on the moonlight side of the summit that day.

Big Sky was great when kids 10 or under could ski free. This year that changed and my cousin and I paid $394 for one days lift tickets for this group and the 2 of us. Screw that.
