Went out grouse hunting this afternoon and ran in to a group of sagehens. Friend shot this bird that had a band and a gps tracker. Talked to this areas wildlife biologist and she said the birds originally came from Wyoming and were transplanted to North Dakota but they keep flying into Montana and staying. Will get more info later this month on the birds travel. Thought it was pretty cool. Only ever heard of waterfowl being banded

Not many can claim a banded sage grouse, especially one with a travel history such as that. Very cool.

Interesting. Last sage hens I shot were taken in November forty years ago around Lewistown, MT. A biologist gal was studying the two flocks that were coming to the farmer's alfalfa field to feed. She said they flew seven miles one way every day from where they roosted. Amazing. No surprise they're such tough eating!
