what is the reason that some guys that sit on baits not tack a bear? it would seem that as long as the bear comes you just have to shoot. what is the most common mistake hunters make or could avoid to improve their chances while sitting on a bait site?

Hold still and be careful about scent ie...don't smoke, hang around the campfire, use aftershave...Moving too much is likely the biggest culprit though.

Also to go along with what Big Sky said; I think some bears hit baits at night when your not in your stand. Seems to depend on the bear and his/her eating habits , but I do know that some hit baits after dark

Although bears move and feed at different times, depending on the area, food availability and the particular bear's habits, most will be active during the night, early morning hours and late evening. Many hunters move into the area and disturb the bear on their way to the bait, or leave before it's completely dark. In order to be successful, you need to be (firstly lucky)and be willing to do all of the above along with arriving at the stand early and leaving late.
