Does Anybody on here have any experience hunting mountain caribou with a bow? I have the opportunity to add one on to a dall hunt, and plan to if I see a big one. If I kill a sheep early I'm going to dedicate the remainder of my time trying to get a caribou with a bow. They'll be in velvet. Starts July 27.

I've hear they're fairly nomadic, and as one 'fairly accomplished' bow hunter told me 'custom made for killing with a bow.' Just curious on other's knowledge of their behavior, habits, tactics to hunt them, etc...
What would you compare them to in the lower 48 in terms of wariness?

Who are you hunting with? Early in the season they can be up high with the sheep to get away from bugs. They can also be a curious animal and if not sure what you are may come closer to have a look. Guided for a few but all rifle hunters, but was in bow range lots of times.
Good luck.

I'm hunting with Gana River.
That's what it sounds like to me, that they are kind of nomadic and it just kind of are where you see them. I'm going on the July 25 hunt.

I'm not above shooting one with a rifle either, but would sure like to get it done with my bow if time/opportunity allows.

Ya and sometimes they will stay in an area for days and when you decide you will try for one that is when they decide to pick up and move.
They are quit impressive when still in velvet.
I guided in the NWT but for a different outfitter. One of my hunters was from Montana (Townsend) but that was some time ago.
