Came close, Today my credit card company called about a pair of transactions that raised a red flag. They said they got a $1 charge from I-tunes, followed by an $1800 on-line attempt at Bed Bath and Beyond. Lucky they did their job, and denied it until I called to verify it. So, I need to get a new card number sent to me. Question is, I wonder where they lifted it. I have my best guess, A Mexican food place me and the wife go to. One of the few places that I can think of that takes the card from me and goes into a different room to ring it up. Most other places I scan myself or do on-line with secure transactions for what that is worth.

Anyone ever had a similar thing happen?

WAL-MART
they had a recent rash of credit card numbers thefted, mainly in the midwest and south. the processor that wal-mart uses had employees stealing card numbers for a very long time.

I posted this to a friend that had it done here in az
I was talking to one of my customers this is what he told me. about the same time
One of my customers was telling me his CC card got thefted. the bank caught is and cancled his account.

it happened 2.5 weeks ago also.

The processing dept(US wide), for WALMART had employees stealing the info and using them, you might want to check into it.

Recently we had the bank stop transactions for my son's checking and debit card because of attempted hits. There was quite a few others at this bank also. It was not a identity theft just some hacker got a bunch of account numbers from the bank. Just had to wait for a new debit card.

Visa had a ton of numbers stolen recently. I was notified, had my card canceled and got a new one in Febuary.
About ten years ago, we got a call from one of our card companys, seems someone was trying to use my card number to buy $10,000 worth of girls La Cross equipment ???
I can just see some crazed mother promising her daughter to take care of the whole team.

Interesting. Del, the wife shops at wally world a lot, but myself rarely. May be the place it was taken. I just figured it would be a place that had the card in hand. I wonder how they would get the number if you do the actual scanning and the employee did not see the card?
It was also my carn number, not the wifes card number from the same account. It has been a couple weeks since I have been there.

I think one of us has had a identity theft today!

Threads...Posts and PM's are disappearing all over the board!

Interesting - I also got a call Tuesday about my Am Ex card - someone was trying to do an $1800 purchase at Best Buy online. I should get my new card today. I was wondering of one of the online places I have shopped got hacked.

have you eaten at a Mexican resturant recently? ;)

I had two attempts to charge airline tickets to S. Africa last month. They were denied and I had to get a new card. I really think someone got mine at a gas pump at a Circle K I buy gas at since that was the only recent use. I think they can hack into the machines remote.

No - just an Italian place. ;) Hmmm- we haven't been going out to eat much lately. No real reason - just busy doing other stuff. It may be time for a family night out.

Current plans with my son - next weekend - Arizona for prairie dogs. April 4th - pheasant club. We may have to go out this weekend.

I guess I should rule out Mexican food? :D

Yes, I lost my entire ID. Took over a year to square away. the ATF still gives me fits. Now everything goes through a shredder before it hits the trash.

Twice but was not too much of a hassle- one time wife's purse stolen, another time Outback Restaurant but the waitress was "caught" by my niece who just happened to work there!

How was she caught?

There was a very large processor of credit and debit cards that had their system compromised recently. It could have been anywhere that you used the card even if it was used in front of you. The info goes to the processor and it was hacked from there. Everyone that uses plastic (credit or debit) should be on-line monitoring their account at least weekly to keep on top of fraudulent activity.

This is one reason why I am not a fan of debit cards. Its one thing if the credit card company says you owe them money from fraud, its another thing to have your cash wiped out then attempt to get it refunded. You will get it back, just a big hassle.

Similar ...... Just last week, some azz clowns hacked into our company phone system and rang up $49,000 in international calls.
We're still hashing it out with our phone service provider.

To answer the question...........YES...and it SUCKS! Not just cards/card numbers stolen but all private information (including SSN) used to open new cards and charge up tens of thousands of dollars. It hits the credit reports and you have a lot of work to do in the form of a sherriff report, FTC filing, reconciling, cancelling, phone calls, changing accounts and everything. It's frustrating to try and prove you are who you are when someone else has used your information to change things. That's what I've been dealing with and it sucks. I did get a new Costco AmEx card in the mail with the supposed thief on it...interestingly looks incredibly like me so I guess that's why the photo change didn't raise any flags

Wow, revived a 4 year old thread. But I guess this is a good one to talk about as it may save some headaches for others. I still argue with my wife because she gives out her SS number too often. I tell her that doctor and dentists do NOT have a right to your SS number. They can ask, but they can do the job without it. When I go to the doctor or dentist and the woman gets angry when I do not give my SSN i tell her to do the same thing as she would when a illegal immigrant gets care there. What prompted me to say this the first time was when I was at a hand specialist and there was a guy who only spoke Spanish and had an interpreter helping him fill out paperwork. When the clerk stated she had to have my SSN i told here that I bet the guy sitting over there didn't have one. She looked at me with a blank stare and then went on without it. I have a insurance card, photo ID, drivers license, and that is all they are getting from me.
Your SSN is like the golden ticket for ID theft, protect it well and only give it to those who by law have to have it.

Even though an "OLD THREAD" it's a good one. I had it done last month. They will try I-tunes or something very small for $1.00 to see if the card works and then go on to bigger stuff. My card now notifies me by phone when strange charges are made. (text message).

good luck to all

I will add that things go in waves. on my website I will not see any attempt for a couple months and then a few a week try to run stolen credit card numbers through. Guess who gets to eat the charges if they go through and the item is delivered?? Me. Here is what they do, they hack into a database usually from a credit card gateway or other large source and steal all the info. They get your name, addy, credit card info and billing phone number all at once. Then they go online and buy stuff and have it delivered to a vacant home, or to an apartment. They cruise by and pick it up off the porch or floor from the apartment building. That is why on my website any order that has a delivery address that is different than the billing address must be shipped ADULT SIGNATURE required. It is a bad deal, but there are so many losers out there who do this all day long. Sad thing is that the CC companies don't eat any of the charges. If they did, they would tighten up security and help out with catching these guys. It would be pretty easy to do, I flag a lot of orders as being fraud, and if the CC companies and police would stand behind it a sting could be made easy. All i would have to do is ship the item and have surveillance set up to watch who picks up the box off the porch.
