I have a nice wall tent... and I have a real nice backpack tent....

We decided to sell our camp trailer as we figured out it was costing us about $500 a night to "camp" in... lame! So now I am looking for a Great "Family" tent. I want it comfortable, big, Very weather proof... Its gotta fit the four of us and a dog or two comfortably and it has to be fairly easy to transport, as a lot of our trips will be in our Sienna with a rocket box on top.... It will also be "mostly" summer camping, but I'll surely use it for some road/hunting trips if the weather isn't too nasty.

I want something with a floor, thats why the wall tent is not being considered.... (mama dont like bugs and crawly things and such....)

Got any good ideas and experience? My thoughts are Alaknak or maybe even the big Cabelas Alaskan outfitter domes....

Thanks

I have the 8man Cabelas alaskan dome with the aluminum poles, pretty easy to set up and plenty of room for those you intend to take and has a floor and an optional floor liner, which I would suggest if you'll have a dog inside. Weight is not bad, I've even used it for a couple 2-3 mile pack in hunts and it was not that bad packing it in or out, any further and I'd want something lighter. You could still carry a boned elk quarter and it if you wanted to.

My buddy has the Bighorn II and it's bullet proof, but definitely a next to the car sort of tent. Pretty heavy with the poles, but nice and tall and roomy, and I can attest to it withstanding 50+ mph wind gusts and quite a bit of snow. Has a stove jack and is a pretty darn good tent as well. I have no experience with the Alaknak, but if you want to use cots when camping with the family I would recommend the Bighorn over the ALaskan dome.
