I hunt cow elk with a rifle very similar, 1950's pre 64 in 270. 3-9 Burris scope and 130 grain TTSXBT Barnes all copper.

I ran into a father and daughter team using the same rifle and ammo when I was bird hunting. She had a late season bull elk tag.

She was in her late 30's, been hunting with her dad since her late teens. THey shared that rifle. Only one he had or she ever shot.

A few hours after I met them, my cell phone got a text message and photo.
She took a fine bull elk at 540 yards on the high prairie.

The cool thing about those old Winchesters was having a barrel harmonics screw under the for end which could be set for individual bullets.

I was able, once to put three bullets into one jagged hole at 100 yards, then using a fixed 4x weaver scope.

Going to the 3x9 scope at 400 yards I could keep three shots well under 4 inches unless the wind was wild. The best I could ever do at 400 yards with the fixed 4X scope was 8 inches. 10 inches was the norm.

This rifle does not have that.

It’ll shoot. This was a quick three shot group to check zero after the rifle hit the deck and landed on the eyepiece housing. IMG_5290.jpeg
