A package showed up today. Retro this year. I haven’t shot the .243 since I took my daughter elk hunting in WY years ago. I think I’ll give it a workout this year.

Beautiful rifle. On a side note I don’t see any of your spoons in Red and Gold. That was my secret weapon for silvers on the Penninsula, have fun.

It’s a fun story. My grandpa gave me a Winchester M62 many years ago. I didn’t shoot it at all because it was chambered in .22 WMR and ammo was very hard to find.

A friend heard me mention it one day and asked what I wanted for it. Not for sale I told him. This went on for months. One day I came into the office and this pre 64 was on my desk as a trade offering, and one I couldn’t turn down.

Sweet, I'll be curious to hear what you think of them. I think those would be my first choice if I was to pick up a 6 mm

I grew up on a dairy farm in Connecticut, half hour north of New Haven of course of Winchester fame. My first trips away from home were to the Winchester factory and Museum. I drooled and have had 3 pre-64's and a 54, the father of the model 70. I still have the 54 in 30-06 and a mid 50's production standard weight model 70 in 270.

All pre-64's have poor safety engineering for accidental case head separation. I make sure to use once fired brass when hunting.

I have had several newer still New Haven made model 70's, a stainless synthetic in 300 Win Mag, sold it and still have a Stainless walnut stocked featherweight in 6.5x55. I only keep it because of the caliber. I see all the shortcuts in production compared to pre-64's and I cringe.

Barnes bullets have upgraded the 243 to elk worthy at closer ranges.
I would prefer a 4x scope for better work up close, but I could with good cheer enjoy hunting with your rifle as it is,,,(that is saying a LOT !!)

I am so pleased to see the ornate original metal Butt plate. I could cry when I see them replaced with rubber recoil pads.

The pattern of the wood stock is far better than most pre-64 models 70's, looks like the quality of a Browning Safari grade rifle. Have had one now for 56 years. years.

The three position safety is so high class. Best safety ever and lastly never top feed a pre-64 or ant Mauser rifle. You could damage them. Third under metal screw is kinda hidden. Does yours have the under-barrel lug screw for adjusting for barrel harmonics.

I have a tang safety .243. Bought it 35 years ago stupid cheap from a buy that couldn't fit it in his nose. Forever rifle. mtmuley
