In some places in Colorado, a turkey is almost harder to get than an elk it seems!

I would suggest using RMEF meetings etc and seeing if someone will come with you on an elk hunt. That way you aren't trying to follow them to their secret spot but you get their guidance on your hunt. Obviously easier if that's a friend. Also easier if they can join for a couple days and not burn a week's leave for a backcountry hunt. If hunting OTC, you might find a couple guys that you all have tags.
