A Quick Morning Hunt

My 8-yr old son was off from school today, so we made a quick trip up the mountain in hopes of catching a few grouse out sunning themselves or picking up gravel. We ended up seeing six grouse, five ruffed and one blue. I managed to secure two ruffed grouse for the pot and peppered the tail of the blue grouse.

While walking down one of the closed roads, my son suddenly pounces on something in the road and starts yelling "I got it, I got it". I asked what did you get and he said a bird. I'm thinking he has somehow managed to grab a grouse, but come to find out it was a young (albeit wet and cold) Varied Thrush. He gently set it back down onto the side of the road and it jumped up onto a low hanging branch and watched us pass by.

Great day on the mountain and I think I found a back up blacktail hunting spot. Lena girl still has the bird mojo, even though she turns thirteen in December. She can still jump into the back of the truck with no help. Good luck to everyone out and about this weekend.

Stunning photos. That first one the foliage is so intensely colored that it looks fake.
