Well, as some of you may have seen in the pronghorn section I went on my first prong horn hunt this past weekend (a CO RFW hunt) and scored a nice little doe. In preparation for my success :hump: I brought along the igloo 100qt marine cooler in those pics For ice I decide to try something new. I filled with water and froze 1 gallon ziploc freezer bags. These went into the cooler Friday morning about 0900. On Saturday we opened the cooler and insert the doe about 1700ish and noticed plenty of ice remaining. Sunday I got home about 1500 and started to unload. The cooler was the last thing out (quarters were already at the processor) and after I took the bs and tls out I went to empty the ice. I found that the ice blocks were still well over half of their original size after two and a half days with temps in the 70s to upper 80s. I was pretty pleased with that and how well it cooled down the meat.

Not bad....we have used frozen gallon plastic jugs but we discarded the compressor-less chest freezer carcass and now use various sized ice chests. Your idea sounds more space friendly...will give it a try.

We get milk delivered so no gallon jugs and looking at the box of ziplocs I had I just said "why not?'"

Not a bad idea, I like to take the kids 1/2 chic milk jugs or the OJ carton etc. Just wash em out really well and fill with tap water 7/8's of the way. This makes nice blocks of ice and if you ever need extra water you have it also.

I have a couple of 165 qt Igloo's and I use the same philosophy only bigger. When we used to have a cat, we bought the cat food in a 2 1/2 gallon rectangular container. I now fill those up and put the in the chest freezer for a couple of days before I leave. I then put the frozen blocks in the Igloos and fill in around them with cube ice. The blocks are still frozen, albeit smaller, when I get home after 10 days or so.
