A day of Chukar Hunting

Had a great afternoon of chasing chukar with my GSP Rudy today. Found enough birds willing to hold long enough for Rudy to go on point that I was able to bring five birds to the bag. I passed on three or four shots on birds that I kicked up without a point from Rudy. Here is a few pictures of my day in the field.

Looks like a great day. I really need to get a bird dog and start bird hunting (other than turkeys), it looks like a lot of fun. The lab I have was never trained but he has the instincts. Besides for me dogs are like guns; any excuse to get another.

Like often is the case with Chukar, I had to walk to the top of the ridge to get into the first covey. Fortunately, this covey was quite large (30-40 birds) and didn't just bail off the ridge to places unknown. They split into smaller groups of 5 to 10 and spread all along the face of the ridge. In their smaller groups they held well and Rudy did a great job holding point making for some pretty easy shooting opportunities. Usually the birds just drop off the side of the ridge, coast across to the top of an adjacent ridge, and then proceed to "chuckle and laugh" at me, because they know going after them would require me to walk back down 1000 feet into the canyon and then walk back up 1000 ft. up the ridge they just landed on. As I am sure you are all aware, such is the life of a Chukar Hunter.
