I was lucky enough to draw 6A Late season Elk and have heard the roads are horrible in this unit. I am planning on flat towing a capable jeep behind my cab over camper. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the unit could suggest a base camp that they feel I would be able to get too that is close enough to fuel and of course elk would be a bonus :-). Feel free to PM me if anyone is willing to share. Thanks in advance

Just got back this week from the early rifle cow hunt in this unit. Basically, we got rained out. Over 10" of rain on the west side of the unit so far this month. The elk are spread out all over the place, and travel on these roads is sloppy at best. Downed trees with the 70+ MPH winds were a limiting factor in where we could go the first few days. Elk were mostly found on the opposite ridgelines from the main roads: North-south travelling roads we found the elk on the east or west facing sides of the road or the opposite backside of the hill.

Depending upon the arrival of winter there is a southerly migration into the junipers (from the pines) that occurs with the first heavy storm. Elk head into the thick junipers & canyons, making this a tough hunt.

Thought I would provide an overview of what current conditions are...

Let me know if you have any questions.

Camp off the main FS roads, you’ll want the flexibility if it wet and muddy. PM Me with any specific questions
