I've been wanting to build a rifle of my own, but couldn't decide on a caliber, there are so many out there! After doing quite a bit of research, I think I've found the one, the 338-06. From what I've been able to find, the 338-06 should fill my wants. Anyone else shoot this caliber? Would like to hear your experiences with it. I would be reloading it, so I'm not worried about factory ammo. I have to find a decent donor rifle for it, either a Savage 110 or Remington 700 and have it rebarrelled, which shouldn't be a problem. Thoughts? Anyone know of a factory built rifle in this caliber?

A-Square adopted the 338-06 and it is now a SAAMI standardized round.
If memory serves correctly, Weatherby actually chambered some of their Mark Vs in it.

A Savage donor would be a good foundation. Easy to work on.
Since it is now a SAAMI round, reamers and headspace gages should be readily available.

If i were to do one, it would be Savage 110 Action, E.R. Shaw barrel. Get headspace gages from 4D Reamer Rental, set headspace, return gages, and be done with it.

A Shaw barrel was my initial thoughts for a re-barrel. Didn’t know one could rent reamer and gages. Thank you.

Sounds like a plan. .338-06 should be able to knock down anything in NA. I've built a Savage in .243 and it is a tackdriver at 600 for F-Class. If I were to built today I'd pick up a Remington 700 LA from grabagun have it trued and build from that. Good luck and keep us updated.

I have 2 E.R. Shaw barrel right now. Soon to order a third.
Price for quality is quite good. And their bluing is a thing of beauty!

built a few on colt light rifles, 200 gr bullet at 2800. good 6.5 lb rifle for 400 yards,,

Why not a 9.3 x 62? Pretty much the same thing. Rifles are available already chambered for it, etc.
While both have merits for a reloader, I would say bullet selection. Sportsman's shows 1 9.3 bullet and 18 338 bullets. I'm sure midway, grafs, or powder valley have more but also more .338s.

I rebarrelled a Rem 700 to the Ackley Improved version. It has been on exactly two elk hunts and was super effective including this years cow!!.......250 Partitions @ 2550 hit like a freight train inside 200 yds!!2019-11-07 12.24.59.jpg

When I owned one I had great luck with a 185 grain Barnes TSX and RL15.

If I was to do it again (and I may), I'd make mine lighter. I have a blued pre-64 M70 that weighs about 8.5lbs scoped and loaded. Its not a heavy kicking rifle, no more than a 30-06 more or less. I'd go with a SS remington action/barrel and quality composite stock, cut it at 21". Light, handy and easy to swing. My idea would be to rebore or rebarrel a kimber 30-06

The only one that chambered them that I'm aware of is Weatherby, in their ultra light setup. If I remember it was a 6.5lb rifle, flutes with their patented ugly ass stock.

Didn't Remington chamber their anniversary model in this one year? Or am I confusing it with the .35 Whelen?

Don't think so. A-Square thought they had the world by the balls with their chambering. No one wanted to play his money game, or that's how I understood it. Remington did chamber the 35 whelen. I have a classic in 30-06 from the early 80s, back then, they chambered half a dozen or more calibers a year in them, before going to a single chambering and finally discontinuing them in the 90s or early 2000s.

Just completed this same project this October in time to work up some loads and use it for a ND mule deer. If you don’t mind a heavy barrel, ER Shaw comes with a heavy Magnum profile with big wrench, grease and go/no-go gauges for a good price. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them!

my rifle:
Stevens 200 action
ER Shaw 24”barrel
Boyd’s prairie hunter stock
Leupold VX3I 3.5-10x40

my load:
Remington .30-06 brass that I had a bunch of, Varget, Barnes 185gr TTSx.

I worked harder than I had to on getting this rifle assembled but it worked out well. Did all of it myself with research and basic tools. Opened barrel channel, bedded stock, had to shim box magazine in stock. I’d do some of it differently if I were to do it all over again but don’t regret anything. Planning on working up loads with the 210gr TTSX and never messing with any other bullet again if I get good results.

I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye Stainless with a 24-inch barrel in a 30-06, and after reading about the 338-06 I’m considering getting it rebarreled/rechambered. Anyone had any experience using the M77 to build from to the 338/06? Anyone know of the gun manufacturers in Montana that does rebarreling/rechambered? Thanks
