I shot in this comp with a 300 win mag. It was at 800,900,&1000 yards. Started out with 185 McMillan ammo then got 190 from AMU. The gun did everything I asked of it. I don’t have any experience with an ultra mag so I can’t help there. In the right hands I can’t imagine there would be much of a difference between the two. I don’t reload either so the big decision for me would be which ever one is cheaper to feed. I’d also think about the distances you’ll be shooting at, if it’s only 300 or 400 yards I think you’d be leaving a lot of potential out. To each their own though.

I would choose the 300WM, not only is ammo more plentiful, and cheaper, it will also be cheaper to reload. But as a side note, my 30-06 accomplishes the same task as my 300WM, with less recoil and cost to operate as well.
There's faster .30's, but not in a "factory" type rifle using factory ammo. The .30-378 maybe, but with like 26 inch barels, the RUM and the WBY are neck and neck. mtmuley

The thought of accurately sending a self rolled 200 grain 30 cal circa 3200 fps appeals to me. I have an easily modifiable platform with a barrel need, capable information sources, and curiosity....simple decision.

Ok, they both use the same exact size and weight bullet's. So what is the advantage to the 300 RUM over the 300 Mag? For that matter the 30-06 also use's the same size and weight bullet's and is a proven round for a lot longer than either of the other two, what's their advantage? They can kill an animal farther? I doubt that! Have used 7mm RemMag, 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag in the past and find no advantage to the mag's unless you really want to use heavy bullet's. Then the magnum's smash animals and the 30-06 simply kills them!
It's certainly not for everyone, but there is something about pushing big bullets really fast. And Don, one advantage to me is I can hold dead on a critter with no corrections at yardages other cartridges are kicking up dirt below it. mtmuley

I would venture to say a rum would be a bit much for the average hunter. The WM may be a better fit for a wider demographic of hunters. The question is where on the spectrum are you?

I have had two 300 Win Mags and two 300 RUMs. I still have the two RUMs.
I have to admit that there are days I notice the extra 2” of barrel and there are days when I think a Tikka SL in 300 WM would be nice.

When I started looking for a longrange rifle I started with reloading and fixing up my rem700 30-06. Then you realize its limits with 178g eldx doin 2650fps. So I figured if get a chance at a bull elk 27hrs away from my home I kinda want a hammer but as light as I can accurately shoot. The Ridgeline 300RUM with a brake is a joy to shoot. Still building trigger skills to make burning that much powder worth it. So far im happy with RUM.

The use and barrel Length are key for me. Less than 26”win mag for sure. The rum is wasting a lot of powder and recoil for limited gains. Greater than 26” I would go with the rum. Especially if you are ok with a brake or are not recoil sensitive. That long of a barrel though and I feel it is pretty annoying to pack as an every day hunting rifle. Mostly just a long range setup.

For the performance gain to powder burnt scenario i would look at one of the short magnums.
300 WSM, 300 RSAUM, or 300 RCM.
All out there in "factory" rifles. Albeit mostly found on the previously enjoyed rack.
If Dakota and Lazzeroni build rifles and make/sell ammo, then wouldn't it be classified as "factory"??

The 30-06 is to the 300wm is to the 300rum. Let's take 180g class bullets.
30-06=2800fps 57g powder
300wm=3150fps 75g powder
300rum=3400fps 95g powder
There is significant gain from one to the other with each of these. With those gains comes some cost in resources and recoil. Recoil is easily managed with a quality muzzle brake. Personally I would have a brake on any of these three.
Extended range capability is obviously greater with each of these cartridges. More importantly the max point blank range (mpbr) capability with each of these is increased greatly. So I went to JBM calculations and ran some numbers at sea level. As altitude increases so will these numbers. mpbr is defined by a 5" radius. This means that you could hold the center of a 5" radius target and hit it from zero to the max. To me this is the greatest advantage of the rum. At most of our altitudes this means that you can set your scope at the mpbr zero and be able to hold center mass on a deer out to 450y without any change in aim point. Top of the back at 500y. Still holding hair with no calculations to this range is very lethal. Inside this range animals are often aware of your presence and time is short. Beyond this range they are not and you have time to make calculations. (if you are a long range guy) A quick check on the range finder making sure that the target is inside you pre determined mpbr, and now all you have to do is concentrate on shooting.

The thing that attracted me to the 300 WM is that it has become so widespread in use. There are so many different ammo loads you can find whatever fits your application. Plus, the aftermarket for rifles/accessories is just full of options.

I have a .300WM. Its an impressive cartridge. I've never even shot a .300 RUM, so I really have no basis for comparison.
That said, I've really gravitated back to my .308 in recent years as a go-to. I'm not about to get rid of that magnum, but I did get tired of hauling that heavy thing around.
