2026-2027 Upland Bird Thread

Last weekend was supposed to be grouse camp on a small tract of national Forest that usually holds a few birds and fewer people.

The pancreas has other ideas. 3 days in the hospital on a steady diet of saline and Dilaudid got me kicked loose Friday evening. Spent Saturday working up the nerve to eat solid food, and then took the dog to a new cover Sunday for a few hours. Moved a couple doodles but it was dry as a popcorn fart & windy to beat all.

So instead of a nice nighttime shot of a wall tent, or a tired dog with a couple of pats, here's what the ER room of Munson looks like.

Giving it the week before hitting it all again. Greta has a bit of a hot spot on her wrist still so we're both batting about average considering the last few seasons.

I always have a goal to shoot a MN public land rooster. Goal accomplished. The first couple outsmarted me by flying on the opposite side of bushes. But by applying every bit of brain capacity I have, I got the third one. Well okay. Truth be told, it was my labs who outsmarted it. But I didn’t miss!IMG_0194.jpeg

Gonna head out today for a little pheasant hunting again. Nice weather after about 6 days of rainy weather. I will report back with results! 37 degrees, sunny and 10 mph winds.....awesome weather!
Beautiful morning today. Good luck!

How many times can I go to the well on this piece of public??? Well apparently a third time this week. Got one this afternoon. Should have got the second but they again proved they have slightly more intelligence than I do. My labs split. One left. One right. Both birdy. Picked the birdiest one. Picked wrong. Twice. Sun got me twice. Just couldn’t tell if it was a rooster. 3.9 miles of beautiful day, excellent dog work and a bird in hand!
