2025 Garden!

no, not soggy, the only soil that is wet/damp is the first 4-5 inches and it dries out too fast. Could be the bags I have which came from A.M. Leonard which are good quality. Mine are 5 gallon size.
Probably the way I hold my mouth? Don't know but done using mine.

And they are in direct sunlight? I have never used five gallon size so I do not now if that is an issue or not. They do drain well by design so it could be too tall and too much direct sunlight especially in the heat of the summer. I would try putting a few in an area where they get some shade in the hottest part of the day and see what happens. I use 2 1/2 gallon size exclusively except for carrots I use flat ones that are about 18x24 size. Taters do good in semi shady areas.

During college me and a pal used to drive gravel roads on the way home from work and have a couple pops and pick asparagus. We’d fill a grocery bag in a few miles when it was good. Go home and sauté them or oven roast the whole batch for dinner. Rule was everyone pi$$ed outside of the weather allowed.

Having some for dinner tonight. That should lessen the fridge supply a little. My daughter just might get some if I'm feeling generous. I can make a meal out of them. A nice grilled steak to go along with works, too! I usually eat like crazy then start leaving them grow to seed out.

This last rain really has mine popping.

Watering the beds this morning to stay ahead of the heat.
Went to water the lettuce and behind the hot house there is a hole going under the poly carb panel. Raised eyebrow can't be. Sure enough a stray rock chuck dug under and mowed my lettuce off.
We have traps set for him now. Since he knows where it is.
Between the deer the other night coming through and walking everywhere and now a rock chuck it's going to be a fun summer. Last summer is was the herd of cottontails. They can eat a lot! Most of the bunnies are gone now. Between the house cats and owls they don't survive very long.

Caught the young male. Left the traps set in case he has a buddy. He was headed right back to the salad bar.
Have no idea where it came from. Never have seen a one out in the sagebrush or anywhere else close by. Unless they are hid on the neighbors place. Would have thought they would have been over several years back if there were a colony of them close by.
Now I'll have to dig down and place a board buried down in the soil to help stop one from digging if more show up. Will have to do it on the asparagus too.

zucchini, cucumbers, beans, and now a cabbage. Tomatoes are just starting to set fruit. Sweet corn is about ready for first application of fertilizer, winter squash is slow going at the moment. Potatoes are about halfway done.

Made it through pollination season without any hard frost. I enjoy watching the fruits starting to form, peaches, pears and cherries all look to be a good year. Apples are going to be scarce this year in my mini orchard. Strawberries are looking great, already thinking about Strawberry shortcake and strawberry/ rhubarb pie in June.

I have to attend to one of my little wood plots because the grass is bad.

Goal is to cut down the grass and have the clover choke out the grass and weeds. I want to give clover and chicory some more time to grow strong. Then I’ll probably hit it with some arrest to kill off the grass.

Lots of clover established under the grass.


Biggest concern point out of the grass is the canopy. I may birdie a tree or two.

We’re slowly planting. Our frost free date is end of May.

Picking a few asparagus. My boxes failed last year - only a few plants left. I have crowns coming to replant the boxes. Artichokes have heads about halfway done. We’ll pick those in a few weeks. This is the fourth season for those artichoke plants.

Weather looks good in the near future for planting other warm weather crops with protection. I’m always Leary because I’ve experienced snow on June twice in the last 20 years.

brymore, we'er about the same time frame on frost. My asparagus finally kicked into high gear. It's coming faster than we can eat it.
My new crowns I planted I finally had 2 hills come up.
I had 3 potatoes pop up. Covered them back up suppose to go to 34 Monday night or Tuesday. I did plant some tomatoes in one greenhouse we turn the heater on of a night.
Looks like you have deer problems like us.

I've heard a lot if varying opinions. Did you fill the boxes with topsoil?

Boxes have scrap wood bottom half, topsoil next 80% and compost on top.

I’d guess a period of cold caused the damage. I’ve had asparagus boxes for years. I have other boxes full of perennials.

This makes me very happy. It’s only been two days since the grass cut down and clover trim.

Clover is popping and seems like it’ll start overtaking the grass.

We haven’t had any rain, but plenty of morning dew.



I’m super excited nerding out with this. It’s all new to me so let’s see what happens.

Hopefully yall don’t kick me out. This is my form of gardening this year.

Next week I’ll start my bedding project.

We love pineapples so we try to grow as many as we can .
The mother plant has pups growing under the fruit . We twist the pups off and plant them . We have five baby pineapples coming in and a bunch of pups planted .
The garlic seems to be doing good , tomatoes are done already but the strawberries are coming in and are delicious !
Mango's are looking good .
