We went 3 for 3 on elk. I ended up shooting my bull a 6x5 on the first day in the timber. I learned a valuable lesson with the Berger Bullets this year. They did not perform well at close range exploding and not penetrating. The bull was about 70 yards shot with a 168vld out of a 7mm rem going 2991 out of the muzzle. I was able to find the bull about 800 yards later but there was only a couple of drops blood. I only took out 1 lung because of lack of penetration. Upon returning home I bought some 160 grain Nosler Accubonds and worked a load up with them and will try them on a couple Doe close and long range and see how they perform. They shoot very good out to 900 so it looks promising.

My uncle was able to connect on a nice 6x6 the third day.

I used a stone glacier approach pack this year and loved it. It just fits me better than any other pack I have tried. I will post back with what I think of the accubonds after doe season since I filled my buck tag with bow.

What state for the elk?

I think you'll like the Accubonds. Are they the originals or the long range? I've heard mixed reviews on the LR ones. I've been plenty happy with the originals.

I am using the regular accubonds; haven't heard a lot of good things about the LR ones either.

I had good results with the bergers long range but from researching them they seem to perform very inconsistent. I know I will no longer be using them for anything other than groundhogs now. The thought of losing an animal because of my equipment choices does not sit well with me. I know every bullet has its plus's and minus's (impact velocity for example) but the minus's outweighed the plus's for me on the Bergers after this experience.
