    Montana Bowhunt for Elk

I have hunted elk for many years with a bow and am no stranger to how difficult it can be to locate animals. Kind of hard to tell how many miles we walked when it is all up and down hill. We burned our share of rubber. As I said, we weren't the only ones not seeing or hearing elk. We talked to...

    2020 Frank Church hunt. Updated

Great hunt, and great job packing that bull out. Being pushed to your physical limits is strangely fun and exhausting at the same time. Kinda like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer--it feels good when you stop. It's been a dream to float the River of No Return. Read about a guy who got...

    MI Grouse opener 9/15/2020

You had a better opener than I did. Forgot the dog's shock collar, and he doesn't listen worth a damn once he figures out the collar isn't on. He flushed the first grouse way too far out, and then just hunted for himself the rest of the time. At 10 years old, he should know better, but he was a...

    Montana Bowhunt for Elk

Headed to Montana Sept. 1 to bowhunt for elk. Plan was to hunt the Scapegoat Wilderness, so our initial destination was Great Falls. Ran into a grass fire outside Jordan, Montana that required a 4 hour detour. Finally got to our destination a day late due to the detour. We were at the parking...

    Hunter killed by elk

Passing judgment on a person you don't know is one of the biggest problems in our society these days. Avoiding the animal until it was certain it was dead could have avoided the problem. Dead animals don't gore people. I don't need more facts to reach that conclusion.

    Hunter killed by elk

Sad, but an avoidable tragedy. Wounded animals always present a risk, and should be treated with appropriate caution. More than one hunter has been gored and killed before, and it will likely happen again so long as people don't treat an animal that is not dead yet, with respect. Saw a video...

    Winter tent recommendations?

Seek Outside and LUXE both look like good options. However, keep in mind that even synthetic material will mold under the right conditions. Best bet is to always dry your tent thoroughly after use. In most cases, silnylon only takes a few hours hanging in the basement.

    Grouse Season is Almost Here

Now that is some enthusiasm. I know the feeling, having felt that way myself on many occasions before our ruffed grouse opener. This year I will be in Montana bowhunting for elk on our grouse opener. I feel guilty knowing I will not be out with my dog, but there are an awful lot of leaves on...

    Canadian Black Bear Kills Woman

Somebody who regularly hunts the area where we will be said you have to be bear conscious 24/7. Enjoying the hunt by ignoring the risk of a bear attack is not where my head is at. Being on high alert for a possible bear encounter is part of the hunt that I accept as a risk of where we will be...

    Heater for enclosed trailer

If you've got a source of electricity, stick with it as the safest option. Only real threat is if the heater tips over and starts a fire. The modern RV industry uses a CO detector in line with a power vented propane heater for a reason. If the CO detector senses CO, it shuts the heater off...
