Congress Changes Rules To Ease Sales of Lands

I keep seeing this word used in the forums. Is this really ok? How are we supposed to have an informed debate when this is the best you've got? Personally, this level of "discussion" keeps me off of the forums. Randy???? Randy??? Where are you?

    Ground shooting grouse

I agree. They are too tasty to pass up and the cover is too thick to give them any more of a chance to get away.

    backpacking stoves-which one/

I also have used the MSR Pocket Rocket for over 10 years and it has been a very dependable and useful piece of equipment (just like all MSR gear I own).

What's your average Rifle shot range on an Elk?

I've killed 10 elk. All between 70 and 225 yards. 150 is about the average for me.

Non-lead (lead-free) Ammunition Coordinator for California

And thank-you very much for the link to the Power-Shok copper bullets. They are less than half of what I have been paying!

Non-lead (lead-free) Ammunition Coordinator for California

Welcome to the forums! My family eats wild game year round. There's no way I'm going to give my small children meat sprinkled with lead. Copper bullets do not disappoint in performance either :)

    Christmas Ideas for us Hunters

The Sawyer Mini and Gerber Vital are solid choices. Maybe a synthetic game bag or two?

    To Heavy for Day Hunt?

My only problem with a heavy daypack is getting off a quick, accurate shot in close quarters with the pack on. It seems to cause a lot of wobble if worn during the shot.

    Barnes TTSX BT 168gr

I shoot the BT TSX 150 grains and 168 gr (factory vor-tx) out of my 30.06 with great results! So far I have killed mule deer, white tail, antelope, elk, bighorn and mountain goat. Nothing even takes a step. Exit wounds on even small animals (like antelope) have been terrific. Shots have been...

    What is waste?

Great thread! Certainly nothing left in it's natural habitat is "wasted". I agree with Buzz that putting iffy meat in my burger bags doesn't feel good at the table. Throwing out scraps isn't very cool to me either. The past few years I have ground everything (including connective tissue and...

    Tough Antelope

One year I did an experiment and processed my elk in three different batches. One batch hung for 3 days, while the others hung 5 & 7 days. There was a very noticeable positive change in the tenderness and flavor as the meat hung. If conditions allow I won't hesitate to hang meat for up to 14...

    Scapegoat/Bob Marshall Wilderness Areas

You pretty much need horses to do this hunt (or a few special forces buddies). Hunting is not what it used to be and there are bears to deal with. Still, this is a classic elk hunt and you can hunt the rut with a rifle.

    Montana opener 5 days away

Seeing lots of 5th wheels ready to go. I'm hunting by the house so resisting the urge to actually get dressed already. Making food instead.

Either sex: still needs proof of sex!

Can't find the link, but last year or the year before a man was arrested for screwing antlers into does' skulls for transport. Was a weird story. Never underestimate the resourcefulness of real criminals!

Last Montana youth hunt for my son and I,,,,

    "Sportsmen" Supporting I-177

We can't even talk among ourselves without this being so ugly. I was in town the other day and saw a truck plastered in "smoke a pack a day" and "no I-177" stickers. What does the general public think about that kind of representation of trappers and their wildlife management values? I don't...

Elk steaks, what did I do wrong?

Do you know how long they were aged? In my experience 10-14 days at 40 degrees is about right. A marinade may help. Maybe even some old school tenderizer (chemical or mechanical)
