I lived in Missoula on and off from 2004-2010. I both had a lot of fun and despised it. I don't see it as any worse than any other of Montana's biggest half-dozen towns, and view it better than most.

The virtue of any town is not the amenities within it - the people, the entertainment, the fun - it's the country around the town that ideally contains as little of the aforementioned as possible. I felt like I could "get out of town" quick when I lived in Missoula.

That said, I go there for work often, yesterday in fact. Like a hell a lot of Montana, it's way different than it was even ten years ago. I actually question whether it is a good place for families nowadays.
